Small Talk about Sensor While Travelling (151)

"Falling ill on every festival" – during the National Day and Mid-Autumn Festival holiday, I caught a cold on October 1st, and even after 15 days, I still haven’t fully recovered. This morning, I got up early to head to Yangzhou, Jiangsu Province, to attend the 2025 Sensor Industry Development Conference organized by the Sensitive Components and Sensors Branch of the China Electronic Components Association.

"Every China Eastern Airlines flight is delayed" – in recent months, it seems that every time I take a China Eastern Airlines flight, there is a delay. This morning, I got up at around 7 o’clock and rushed to the airport to take flight MU2796 from Xi’an to Nanjing, which was scheduled to take off at 10:50. However, there was heavy fog at the airport, and all flights departing from Xi’an Airport were delayed. Flight MU2796 will now take off at 12:10. There’s nothing I can do but have a bowl of "China Eastern Airlines Noodle" first – it tastes quite good.

The 2025 Yangzhou Sensor Industry Development Conference will be held tomorrow (October 16th) at the Jinling Hotel in Baoying County, Yangzhou. There will be speeches by 12 guests, covering the current situation analysis of China’s macro electronic component enterprises, as well as the current situation analysis and outlook of China’s instrumentation industry. Of course, most of the content will focus on the technological development, current situation and outlook of various types of sensors.

Gu Ge (the author) has also been invited to give a speech at the conference titled "The Road to Localization of China’s Industrial Pressure Sensors", hoping to throw out a brick to attract jade and arouse the industry’s attention to the future development of China’s pressure sensors.

The Sino-US technological war is becoming increasingly fierce, widespread and detailed. Both sides are using a thousand-fold magnifying glass to find each other’s weaknesses. The United States’ containment of China’s technological development has become a bipartisan strategy – the Democratic Party acts quietly, while the Republican Party acts with great fanfare.

Although sensors are niche products, they come in a wide variety and play a restrictive role in many industries. Sensors used in military products and major equipment are particularly important. In fact, as early as the last century, the "Coordinating Committee for Multilateral Export Controls (COCOM)" formed by the Western alliance led by the United States had already imposed restrictions on various sensors used for military purposes. However, after China’s reform and opening up, the restrictions of this organization were not very strict, but many sensors were still restricted.

The United States has never sold high-precision gyroscopes produced by any of its companies to China, regardless of whether they are laser, fiber optic or MEMS gyroscopes; Endevco’s acceleration sensors with a range of over 50,000G are also not sold to China; Kulite’s high-frequency response pressure sensors also hardly enter the Chinese market. There are many more such examples.

In recent years, China has made great progress in pressure sensors, but there is still a long way to go in the high-end field. We should pay more attention to the independent and controllable nature of technology. Those of us in the industry should not only focus on the current output value and profits, but also have a sense of responsibility. We need to pay attention to the impact of the future Sino-foreign technological war on China’s sensor industry.

Admittedly, learning from foreign mature technologies is what we must do first and what we have to do. However, to achieve transcendence, we must have original technologies. As we all know, original technologies are very difficult to develop and require considerable efforts and funds.

But once we master technologies with a certain high-end level, we can handle any project or product with ease. It’s just like how people in Shaanxi make hundreds of kinds of noodles – different shapes, colors and tastes. But as long as we master the core raw materials (flour), various seasonings, dough-kneading techniques, dough-fermenting techniques, the temperature and heat for cooking noodles, and some unspoken processes and techniques, the noodles we make can meet the tastes of different customers.

The original MCS pressure sensor technology developed by Xi’an Chinastar M&C Co., Ltd. has just been launched. With original technology and Chinese raw materials, it can be used for high pressure up to 1200MPa and low pressure down to 100KPa; high temperature up to 180℃ and low temperature down to -80℃ (an attempt to reach -200℃ is in progress); high precision up to 0.02% and low precision with low cost of 0.5%; small diameter down to 10mm and special large diameter up to 100mm. In the future, it can also be used to produce force sensors (load cells) and torque sensors; and of course, wear-resistant flexible sensor matrices can also be manufactured.

To promote the MCS pressure sensor core technology, Xi’an Chinastar M&C Co., Ltd. has launched the GU series pressure transmitters, specially marked with "(MCS Inside)".

The road ahead is long and arduous, but I will search up and down (to pursue it), spare no effort to promote it and do my best for it.
